Photography

I am a self-taught photographer, working and playing in this medium since 1978. For the most part, my work is deeply rooted in both industry and a passionate love of the American road. My photography has earned recognition in a number of publications, including Black & White Magazine, Camera Arts, Harper's, Orion and others.

I believe that beauty is not in flawless surfaces, but in the quiet corners found in the grit of work, the honesty of wear and the character etched by time. I'm interested in human-made elements that intrude on natural environments and the inevitable decay that follows those creations. When the decay becomes more interesting than the original creation, I'm there.

I like to travel light with just one camera, a 50mm lens and using only available light. I have never used studio lighting in my photography. The camera for most images was my first - a 1980 Canon F-1 35mm, a real workhorse. In 2018, it finally began having issues and I went digital, switching to a Fujifilm X-H1, but I still miss the old F-1. The few square images in this portfolio were taken with an old Yashica Mat 124 twin-lens reflex that had light leakage problems but yielded a few usable frames in the brief time I used it.
