Elise Walking Away II

It was our intention to create a character with a nearly full range of emotions using a combination of setting and body language, without ever showing her face. Alone but not lonely. Curious or critical? A fish-out-of-water comfortable anywhere, whether in the vastness of nature or the claustrophobia of an industrial area. And it was to be in black and white because, among other reasons, we felt that it was a more intimate way to place her in the various environments.

This project became our great passion, one that continued on nearly every trip we went on for over twenty years. It made traveling together both wonderful and challenging, especially in national parks where most people were wearing Easter-colored hiking clothes and she was in this backcountry-inappropriate all black costume, which is sometimes, but only slightly, embarrassing for her.
