Driven to Abstraction
While working on the Artificial Daylight project from 1998 to 2004 I often ended up with extra frames of film at the end of a shoot. Good compositions were often difficult to find and with the time-consuming exposures I was not always able to finish a roll of 36 exposure color film (Fujichrome Provia 100). To free up my camera for daytime shooting with black and white film, I would blow off the last few frames of color while driving home, holding the camera near the windshield with the shutter held open, aiming it at light sources and moving it around to 'paint' with the lights.
If it was raining I would let it build up on the windshield, thus creating the blurred effects that some of the images have. Very dangerous, I suppose, but passion does not always make for the safest decisions.
